Business Dynamics and Challenges

Business Activities: The business operates from the owner’s residence in Pampierstad and was initially established as a sole-operator enterprise. Despite its modest beginnings, OSB Group positioned itself as a comprehensive support partner for MSMEs by offering a broad range of services, including bookkeeping, management accounting, payroll, statutory compliance, tax services, business advisory, secretarial services (CIPC and CIDB), and financial statement preparation for all legal entities.
Challenges/Needs: Through a diagnostic assessment conducted on the client a number of challenges and recommendations were identified. Like many rural-based professional service firms, OSB Group faced several operational constraints, and the need for equipment which constrained growth and sustainability. The cost of compliance with professional accounting bodies, including licensing, tax practitioner registration, and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) requirements, placed significant pressure on limited financial resources. The business further experienced persistent cash-flow constraints, which restricted its ability to invest in technology, attend industry-related seminars hosted in urban centres, and hire or retain skilled personnel. Operating in a highly competitive accounting and consulting environment compounded these challenges, particularly as tax legislation continues to evolve annually, requiring continuous skills upgrading and system enhancements. This created a clear need for training to equip the director with the skills and confidence necessary to manage growth, improve service consistency, and navigate market opportunities. Amongst others, access to local markets also proved to be a significant barrier. Despite the strong demand for the services they provide, the business lacked sufficient marketing platforms to showcase their services to a broader customer base. Without market visibility, sales growth remained slow, limiting the business’s ability to generate sustainable revenue. Together, these challenges highlighted the need for structured business development support through non-financial and financial interventions to enable OSB Group to grow from a small-scale accounting firm into a competitive and professional business.

Intervention Insights and Results

Intervention Details: A series of targeted interventions were implemented to strengthen the business and position it for sustainable growth.

To overcome operational constraints, facilitation of access to funding was carried out through the Asset Assist Programme implemented by SEDFA. This support enabled OSB Group to acquire the necessary equipment, technology, and cover operational expenses, thereby unlocking production capacity and business growth opportunities.

Recognising the entrepreneur’s need for continued guidance, OSB Group was enrolled in the SEDFA Enterprise Coaching Programme which equipped the entrepreneur with essential business management and growth skills. To enhance productivity and operational efficiency, the business further participated in Productivity SA training programmes. Recently, the director Ms Mojakgolo completed the Gordon Institute of Business Science Walmart GrowYourBiz Mentorship Programme facilitated by SEDFA.

To address the difficulty of accessing local markets, the business was allowed to exhibit at the Diamond Pavilion Mall Pop-Up Market. This exposure not only increased brand visibility but also resulted in significantly improved sales, demonstrating the strong market potential of their service offering.

Collectively, these interventions directly respond to the challenges identified —bridging gaps in skills, market access, and financing—to ensure that OSB group evolves into a competitive and fully compliant accounting firm.
Outcome Details: As a result of the funding and post-investment interventions, OBS Group has grown in leaps and bounds. The enterprise experienced growth in terms of turnover and sustained employment. The turnover increased from R 535,281.00 to R 559,237.00. Additionally, the employment was sustained with three (3) employees, and four (4) additional jobs were created.
