Business Dynamics and Challenges

Business Activities: Services
Challenges/Needs: Despite the steady growth of Hlasela Security and Cleaning Services, Simphiwe faced several challenges that hindered further expansion. The primary challenge was the lack of capital to purchase essential equipment such as lawnmowers, brush cutters, and other garden maintenance tools required to offer grass cutting and cleaning services. Without the necessary equipment, the business was unable to diversify its service offering and tap into new market opportunities. This limited the business’s ability to increase revenue, grow its customer base, and create additional employment opportunities. Like many township-based entrepreneurs, Simphiwe also faced challenges accessing funding and support to scale his business operations. Furthermore, expanding into a new service line required not only equipment but also the confidence to enter a competitive market and effectively market the new services to potential clients.

Intervention Insights and Results

Intervention Details: The launch of the Sedfa Assist Asset Programme (AAP) presented a critical opportunity for Simphiwe to realise his expansion vision. Recognizing the potential impact of the programme, Simphiwe applied for support to acquire the necessary equipment to introduce grass cutting and cleaning services as a new business division.
His application was successful, and Sedfa approved funding to the value of R220,831.10. Through this support, Hlasela Security and Cleaning Services received various essential garden maintenance tools and lawnmowers, enabling the business to officially expand its service offering.
This intervention was transformative for the business. With the necessary equipment in place, Simphiwe was able to confidently market his new services. He began securing contracts with private residential complexes, churches, and individual homeowners. The availability of proper equipment also improved operational efficiency and enhanced the professionalism and quality of service delivery.
Sedfa’s support not only provided physical assets but also gave Simphiwe renewed motivation and confidence to pursue his long-term growth vision.
Outcome Details: The intervention delivered measurable and meaningful results for Hlasela Security and Cleaning Services.
The business experienced a significant increase in turnover, growing from R1,215,878 to R1,307,988. This represents an increase of R92,110, or 7.58%, demonstrating the positive financial impact of expanding into grass cutting and cleaning services.
In addition to increased revenue, the business also achieved notable employment growth. The number of employees increased from 6 to 9, representing a 50% increase in employment. This expansion created new job opportunities within the KwaZakhele community, contributing to local economic development and supporting household livelihoods.

The business successfully diversified its service offering and strengthened its market position. By securing new contracts in residential complexes, churches, and private homes, Simphiwe established a strong foundation for continued growth.
Importantly, the intervention improved the sustainability and resilience of the business by reducing reliance on a single income stream and positioning Hlasela Security and Cleaning Services as a multi-service provider.
Simphiwe is now well-positioned to continue expanding his business over the next three years. He remains committed to growing his client base, creating more employment opportunities, and building a reputable, sustainable enterprise.
