Business Dynamics and Challenges

Business Activities: Manufacture and retail of jewellery items, including custom-made jewellery, jewellery accessories, and jewellery repairs.
Challenges/Needs: At the time of registration with SEDFA Lejweleputswa, the business experienced the following challenges: • Limited production capacity due to inadequate and outdated manufacturing equipment • Low profitability, making the business vulnerable and unsustainable • Poor market reach and limited clientele • Lack of sufficient working capital to support growth • Limited access to new markets, including export opportunities • Need for skills development and mentorship, particularly for operational expansion Although the business held key industry accreditations such as Jewellers Permit, Jewellery Council of South Africa (member), Certificate of Registration as a Second-Hand Goods Dealer, and Jewellery Trade Artisan Qualification (Goldsmith), these challenges constrained growth and revenue generation.

Intervention Insights and Results

Intervention Details: Upon visiting the SEDFA Lejweleputswa Office, the client was assisted by Mr Khauhelo Maruping, Business Advisor, who conducted a full business diagnosis in line with SEDFA procedures.

The diagnosis identified a critical need for:
• Asset funding to improve production capacity
• Modern jewellery manufacturing equipment
• Raw materials, specifically silver granules, to enable custom jewellery production

Following the assessment, the business was successfully approved for funding under the SEDFA Asset Assist Programme. An amount of R244,000 was approved and disbursed to procure high-production, modern jewellery manufacturing equipment and raw materials.
Outcome Details: The SEDFA intervention yielded measurable and early-stage positive results:
• The business increased employment from 2 to 4 employees, through the appointment of two interns on monthly stipends, representing a 100% increase in employment.
• Business turnover increased from R38,440 to R51,820, reflecting a 34.8% growth in revenue following the SEDFA intervention.
• Net profit improved from R5,041 to R10,581, representing a 109.9% increase in profitability.
• The business successfully secured R244,000 under the Sedfa Asset Assist Programme.
• The business participated in the International IATF 2023 Exhibition in Egypt.
