Business Dynamics and Challenges

Business Activities: Hospitality - Catering and Fast Food Services
Challenges/Needs: When Ms. Ramorakane approached SEDA, the business was still at an early and vulnerable stage. Although she had secured catering tenders, the business was not operating consistently and relied mainly on occasional tender opportunities. This affected sustainability and growth. The main challenges experienced by the business included: • Lack of business skills, especially in financial management, business planning, administration and marketing • Inadequate knowledge of procurement and tender procedures • Absence of a formal business plan • Poor and inconsistent clientele • Limited understanding of the target market • Low profitability and sustainability challenges • Poor marketing and low brand visibility • Limited access to funding • Lack of required accreditations, such as HACCP training and a Certificate of Acceptability • Inadequate catering and fast-food equipment • Limited access to mentorship and business linkages

Intervention Insights and Results

Intervention Details: On the day the client visited SEDA, she was assisted by Mr. Maruping, a Business Advisor. The following interventions were implemented:
• Conducted a full business diagnosis to assess the business needs and gaps
• Provided business development support and guidance
• Assisted with an application for funding through the SEDAFA Asset Assist Programme
• Registered the client for financial management training to improve business skills

In addition, SEDA referred the client to the NYDA for grant funding support. SEDA remains involved in the process, and the client is currently awaiting the completion of the NYDA pre-funding assessment before submitting the funding application.

Through the SEDAFA Asset Assist Programme, the business received funding of R69,400, which was used to purchase a mobile kitchen trailer.
Outcome Details: The SEDA intervention has started to yield positive results for the business:
• The business moved from not operating on a daily basis to actively trading during the festive season
• Monthly turnover improved from R0.00 in August to R20,010 in December
• Expenses increased from R0.00 to R19,638 due to production and operating costs, showing active trading
• The business secured a catering tender in December valued at R6,400
• One temporary job was created during festive season events, with potential for permanency once a school contract is secured
• The client is also in the process of applying for an additional R50,000 NYDA grant
